Synopsis: After being kidnapped, hogtied, and stuffed in the trunk of a car, seventeen-year-old Abigail Nichols' boy problems seem unimportant.
She couldn't be more wrong.
The boy who saves her holds her heart.
But Derick Crawford also holds secrets.
Magical beings who guide human emotions are fighting an invisible war dating back to the dawn of time, and Abigail's one of them. The more she learns of her heritage, the less she wants to know. Armed with a very old, very massive book to teach them about their history, Abigail and Derick run away to a place where they think they can be safe and happy, only to have their troubles secretly hitch a ride.
Her history book is in a sharing mood, and it tells her to keep a secret of her own.
But has she put her trust in the wrong place?
And will the world survive if she has?
REVIEW
The truth will out.
Shattered Secrets is an excellent, unpredictable and highly entertaining YA novel from an author not afraid to take the road less travelled in her storytelling. Centred around the imagined existence of two opposing supernatural factions, it's a good versus evil match to the death. But as is often the case, the hard line between good and bad is often blurry when you examine it more closely, and no one is ever all one or the other.
Having read another of Krystal Wade's books, I'm getting the sense that with her, no character is ever quite safe. Not even the major players. She's kind of ruthless at killing people off, which keeps you as a reader right on the very edge of your seat. And here was no different. There were plenty of OMG moments, and you were always wondering what could possibly happen next.
Shattered Secrets is a true YA - age appropriate, with nothing too sexual. Instead of that tactic, you are kept glued to the pages by the mystery, which was really enjoyable and although similar in theme to books I've read before, it was still unpredictable in its plotting.
Another thing that will keep reader's attention was the interesting relationship dynamic between main character Abigail, and childhood friend Derek. Although their relationship is well established, they're at the start of a new phase, with slowly emerging romantic feelings that were too cute to ignore.
Overall, a highly entertaining and fast paced read. Ideal for fans of authors such as Jennifer L. Armentrout.
