Q&A with Leigh Evans!

The Thing About Weres (Mystwalker, #2)Welcome to our Q&A session with the lovely and entirely fabulous Leigh Evans!

The interview was a lot of fun, especially since we had both just read (and loved) THE THING ABOUT WERES (read our joint interview HERE) and couldn't wait to found out more about the characters, and of course, about Leigh herself.

If you're not yet familiar with the Mystwalker series, check out book one, THE TROUBLE WITH FATE, and see just what you're missing! Also, check out the videos at the end of this post to hear Leigh talk about her characters and the setting for the series!

Author Bio:

About Leigh:

I was born in Montreal, Quebec but now live in Southern Ontario with my husband. I’ve raised two kids, mothered three dogs, and herded a few cats. Other than that, my life was fairly routine until I hit the age of 50. Some women get tattoos. I decided to write a book. A little tardy, but then again, Mum always said I was a late bloomer.

So how old are you now?

I’m not telling you.

Have you always written?

No. I wrote about that here: http://leighevans.com/blog/for-perspi... That post is the first of many that charts my journey from the start of writing Hedi’s story to winning my agent, Deidre Knight, through the Speed-Dating-With-Deidre contest hosted on The Knight Agency blog.

Is The Trouble With Fate your first novel?

Yes. With all the hell that implies.

Do you have plans for more?

Indeed I do. St. Martin’s Press has contracted me for four books. I delighted to add that the UK has picked up on the Mystwalker series too!

Were you always so awesome?

Sorry to disappoint, but I was the kid with the speech impediment in grade school and the wrong hem-length in high school. Let’s not even discuss college, where I discovered all the things that were cool and not so cool, and realized that I probably fell into the latter category. Truth be told, I doubt I’ll ever be awesome, but damn, I keep trying.

Seriously, how old are you?

I’m still not telling you.

Is there a bottom line in life?

Yes. Never give up. Ever. Even bad things eventually turn around. Take that from someone who’d all but farmed herself out into the pasture.

You can reinvent yourself. You truly can.

Interview:

Hi Leigh, and thank you so much for joining us today!

Okay, here we go...

Q. You wake up one morning to find your favorite book's villain has suddenly become real. What book is it, and how do you defeat the villain?

A. The Black Mage is real? Oh, hell! Do you think we can fool him with my Angelina impersonation? All I need is a big gun, some paint-on bruises and a pouty mouth. Plus a stunt double. Come to think of it, maybe we should go with two stunt doubles.

Q. You're taking a writer's retreat. If you could go anywhere in the world to relax and write the day away, where would it be?

A. Any place with tall trees, a soft bed and a willing manservant.

Q. Do you listen to music while writing? What music helped inspire you as you wrote TTAW?

A. When I wanted mood music—as in ‘someone shoot me because my heart is breaking’—I went with either Adele, Ray LaMontagne or Eddie Vedder. Admittedly, Eddie used to be a grunge rocker but some of his stuff is wistful and haunting. Good examples would be his song “Just Breathe” or the track “Guaranteed” from “Into the Wild.”

Pssst: if you’re really into character reveals, I just dropped a big one. Though Trowbridge doesn’t look like Eddie Vedder, he sure does sound like him.

Q. If you had only 24 hours with one of your characters, who would you chose and what would you do?

A. Trowbridge. I’d have hot, nasty sex with him. Wouldn’t you? ;)

Q. If Hedi and Trowbridge were a "normal" couple going out on a date, where would they go?

A. These are two people who have no concept of normal.

Q. It's Christmas. What did Hedi & Trowbridge buy each other?

A. Peace.

Q. Two words: NAKED TROWBRIDGE. We sure do see a lot of him in The Thing About Weres! (And believe us, we are not complaining!) Did you know ahead of time that Trowbridge was such an exhibitionist, or were you as surprised and delighted as we were when he kept taking his clothes off in the book?

A. I was going through menopause when I wrote the book. I’m pretty sure hot flashes had something to do with the number of times Trowbridge kept losing his shirt.

Q. Will there be more Naked Trowbridge in book 3? (We vote YES!)

A. Things become decidedly hot-damn within 30 pages of PROMISES when Hedi discovers the lusty side of her nature. Thank heavens the rest of the story is an action-packed road trip to hell and back. Take it from me—there’s only so many synonyms for “breast”.

Q. What scene in The Thing About Weres is your favorite? Or, which one was the most fun to write?

A. I’m happiest writing any passage where Hedi and Trowbridge verbally spar. In THE THING ABOUT WERES a prime example would be the master bedroom scene. Shoes, cups, and zingers fly.

Q. There are a lot of supernatural races out there. Vampires, demons, witches and wizards, and so on. What made you choose the Fae and werewolves?

A. I’m a huge fan of dogs and I thought fairies would be less angsty. Who knew?

Q. Your characters don't get an easy ride of it in TTAW, and we learned some things that made our hearts hurt for them. Do you find it difficult torturing your characters, or do you positively revel in it?

A. I loathe hurting them. Which means I generally have to take three or four clumsy runs at a painful scene before I can break through my resistance and get the words down on the page. You know what’s worse than putting it into words? The stuff I’ve seen through my character’s eyes that doesn’t get put into the novels.

Q. TTAW had it all - emotional scenes, action scenes, romantic scenes *waggles eyebrows*. Everything a good Urban Fantasy should have. Which type of scene is your favorite to write, and why?
A. Without a question, the funny vignettes! They’re my reward for all those painful scenes. For example—Hedi’s thoughts as she listens to Trowbridge less-than-triumphant return to her trailer following his moon run. “Hurry up, Balto. Come rescue me.” She made me laugh out right!

And finally...

Q. Spaceballs, Star Wars, Star Trek, or Doctor Who - which is your favorite?

A. Star Trek. The quips! The action sequences! The broken hearts! Wait a minute, that sounds like one of my books...

Ladies, thank you for inviting me to drop in for a chat. I’ve loved answering these questions!

Thank you so much for visiting! You can come again any time :)

And for more Leigh awesomeness, check out her video interviews for book one, The Trouble With Fate!
